The Culprits

skin care caffeine molecule From a list of acne causing culprits, caffeine.

Caffeine intake can cause or worsen acne or breakouts in many ways… first of all it is known to throw off hormones in women. In addition to the caffeine in coffee or chocolate, there are other ingredients you should worry about too — processed sugar and milk fats are also known causes for breakouts!

Zeno Acne Clearing Device

skin care acne sephora zeno Does Sephora's Zeno acne device really work?

I am posting this product because I find it interesting. This is a product that is supposed to get rid of acne in 24hrs. My first thought is no way. My second thought is very interesting, I wonder if it works. If it works then I have to have one. I hate waking up and finding a big old pimple.

Real Sex Appeal

skin care acne Real sex appeal is more than skin deep and not necessarily acne-free.

I liked that I was well known for being quick-witted, and formidable in debate. I liked knowing that my peers respected me as one of the “smart kids” and that when I told people what I wanted to do with my life, they believed that I could do it, and do it well. Somehow this whole sex thing seemed to detract from the point. Or maybe I just liked to envision the playing field as a fair one. Equality all around. Beauty (or lack of it) didn’t matter - it’s what you did with yourself. School also perpetuated that. You passed an exam because you were competent - not because you were acne-free.

Review: Roop Facial

skin care facial A review of a facial at Roop.

After Valerie emerged from the room, it was my turn. I was impressed by Jaanvi. She was so careful and explained each step. She seemed to really care about getting to the root of my problem skin. As she inquired about my eating habits, I knew this wasn’t the usual facial. She constructed a facial that was exactly right for me - I knew she wasn’t one of the ‘follow the same ole’ routine for every acne client’ therapists. She took the time to help me consider how to heal my skin, from the inside out.

Sell Me A Gimmick

skin care benzoil peroxide container From a good post on skin care products and trying to look young.

Anyhow I can go back to using drugstore brands and head back to the J N J products that were good to me. The biggest difference now is that I’m using acne on-the-spot treatments with benzoyl peroxide versus salicylic acid (which didn’t work fast enough or well enough). I’ve ruined my 400 thread count king size pillowcase but my pimples go down faster. When I visit Jeff I’ll leave it at home so I don’t ruin his sheets.

Valet Girls

skin care acne valet girls Like it or not, skin care may make a difference in your ability to get a job:

Hot chicks park your ride. You can specify what you want them to wear. Choices include bikinis and lingerie.

Given the option of hiring acne-riddled teenage boys in red vests or beautiful and sexy models and actresses trained in safety and hospitality, we’re betting our success that restaurants, boutique hotels, clubs and private parties will prefer the latter.

Hack Attack

skin care acne boy But if this hacker reads Skin Care News, he might not have acne!

Its been a while since I posted but now I have something big to share- I got hacked! Some kid broke into my blog and replaced it with his triumphant page celebrating his greatness as an 3leet haX0r. I suspect that his time might have been better spent treating his acne and talking to actual real life girls (not old blokes pretending to be girls on msn) rather than defacing my poor little blog. Still no harm done this time, I am back once again and keen to share thoughts, gambling tips and ill informed comment with the world.

TV Rant

skin care BET byron allen Lots of skin care goes into making all those stars look like stars.

Let’s see..lots and lots and lots of make-up and lighting. Yeah, that’s how you describe the people in videos. Just like with models in photo shoots, the people in charge of videos have to make sure that everyone IN the video looks flawless. That means plenty of body/facial make-up…no stretchmarks, cellulite, large pores, acne, blemishes. The hair has be on point, (although there are plenty of jacked up do’s in some videos) which could mean lots of long weaves; straight, wavy, or curly.

Acne Antibiotic for Retinopathy?

skin care acne retinopathy No idea how researchers made the connection between a skin care antibiotic for acne and retinopathy, but they did.

A study by the Penn State College of Medicine suggests that minocycline - an acne antibiotic - may slow or prevent Retinopathy by reducing the inflammatory component of cytokines and microglia and thus the death of retinal cells.

Proactiv Works

skin care acne diagram Here's a testament to Proactiv:

Just a side note, for anyone who’s concerned with acne or pimple on the face, use Proactiv. It really works. If you don’t believe me, stop me in the hallway and stare at my face if you want living proof. Oh wait, that wouldn’t really work; because you haven’t seen my face before I started using it. There’s still stuff on my face though; but hey, I’ve only used it for a week.

Feeling Inadequate

skin care acne treatment complex No reason to feel inadequate. There are plenty of over-the-counter acne products. If those don't work, see a doctor.

Changing the subject, I feel rather inadequate these days. I can’t help but feel like the odd man out for being the fat, acne prone, ugly girl here at FSU, while almost everyone else looks like the perfect picture of health as it should be in the late teens and early twenties.

Tea Tree Oil

skin care acne tea tree oil Tea Tree Oil is a natural skin care alternative for acne treatment.

Even severe cases of acne have been shown to benefit from anti-acne preparations that contain up to 15% tea tree oil, an effect that can be explained by the oil’s antibacterial and skin-healing properties. In one study conducted in Australia, a comparison was made between a gel containing 5% tea tree oil and a traditional 5% benzoyl peroxide acne lotion. The products proved similar in their effectiveness against pimples, although the herbal preparation worked more slowly. It was notable, however, that the product containing the tea tree oil...

Taking Testosterone: Your Skin

skin care acne bad Taking many hormones can lead to acne outbreaks. There are some skin care tips here and the acne may subside over time.

I spoke with a doc today who discussed one of the not-so-great effects of taking T: acne, and not just on the face. Ugh. Well, it’s one of the realities of transitioning, and it’s an understandably unwelcome, unpleasant surprise for some of the transguys I’ve met. The doc recommended Clindamycin Phosphate Gel USP, 1%, prescription only.

Acne Explained

skin care popping zit Skin care starts with understanding skin. Click through for a detailed description of acne.

The exact cause of acne is unknown, but doctors believe it results from several related factors. One important factor is an increase in hormones called androgens (male sex hormones). These increase in both boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne.

Another factor is heredity or genetics. Researchers believe that the tendency to develop acne can be inherited from parents. For example, studies have shown that many school-age boys with acne have a family history of the disorder. Certain drugs, including androgens and lithium, are known to cause acne. Greasy cosmetics may alter the cells of the follicles and make them stick together, producing a plug.

Neutrogena Multi-Vitamin Acne Treatment

skin care neutrogena acne treatment Neutrogina has good acne products.
By Neutrogena. I haven't been using it long enough to notice an affect on my breakouts, but it makes my face feel really soft and smooth. It leaves a bit of a lotion-y (but not greasy) feel on my face, so I wouldn't want to wear it out, but I try to put on some once a day when I'm going to be home for a while. "

Great Blog on Acne

skin care accutane This blogger has a great site that documents his acne treatment with a number of skin care products, starting with accutane. Click for more detail and pictures of progress.
You will see that this drug is serious business-- this stuff is not a joke, and it should not be considered until you have exhausted all other topical treatments, like Retin-A, or antibiotics, bla bla bla. If you have mild acne, YOU DO NOT WANT TO USE THIS STUFF. Period. It can have some serious side effects, as I've said already, and will say again and again. I only had the most common--super-dry lips and skin (which was helped tremendously by Aquaphor Healing Ointment. It's like vaseline on steroids. After the second month when I started using it, it made my lips like 80% better-- and it's only like $7 at the drug store) and Cetaphil lotion and cleanser(!). I want to kiss the maker of Cetaphil. I'll talk more on that stuff later.

Antibiotic Cream and Acne

skin care acne over the counter drugs It's a good idea to see your dermatologist before you try over-the-counter medicine for acne or any skin care.
Am I the only one who has noticed that antibiotic cream (like Neosporin, containing Neomycin sulfate, Polymyxin-B sulfate, and Pramoxine hydrochloride) does wonders for clearing up acne? There must be some sort of side effect to treating pimples with a topical antibiotic, but if so I don't see it. I had a pimple yesterday and I put some neosporin on it in the morning and it was gone by the time I went to bed last night. It worked much more quickly than any of the benzoyl peroxide or erythromycin products I've used (even though they're bactericidal).

Dealing With Acne

skin care acne illustration Here's one tale of dealing with acne. It sounds like Accutane may be the only answer left for skin care in this case.
Since antibiotics and creams and gels don't work, the dermo is gonna put me on the strongest stuff possible. And this is good, because I can kiss my ugly acne goodbye, but the possible side affects are kinda scary. First off, dry skin and lips, which is fine because I already have that because of my current medications. Next off, blood and liver problems. Ouch. I like my liver. Next, people on Accutane have in the past been known to develope mental disorders, including depression, loss of interest in activities, suicidal thoughts, weight gain or loss, irritability or anger, sleeping all the time or not at all, and even psychosis. People have committed suicide while on Accutane, but this is assuming they were already suicidal and Accutane pushed them to the edge. Although it hasn't been proved that Accutane had anything to do with it, it's safe to assume it did.
