Winning A Pedicure
A little dry skin should never ruin a pedicure.
The hour and a half drive turned out to be worth it since...together we won $260! All this on the 5 and 25 cent machines! What gamblers eh? With $30 of the winnings I spent it on a pedicure. I felt a little bad for the girl to have to pick the dry skin off my ugly feet but oh well, it was a nice treat and she really didn't seem to mind.

Winter Forever
Tired of cold weather and dry skin here.
But I am not liking minus twenty-nine degrees and I am tired of all the crap that keeps falling out of the sky. I am sick of winter clothes and dry skin and yucky produce and trying to plan my runs around the sidewalk conditions.

A San Francisco Girl In Omaha
Consider moisturizerOmaha is growing on me only insofar as there actually seems to be good eating, to my surprise. There is this fabulous mediterranean place right near the office. The cold, though, is bitter. It is peeling my face off. I’ve always considered dermabrasion for my acne scars, but this is ridiculous.

Rash And EGFR Inhibitors
If you have cancer and take EGFR in
An acne-like rash or dry skin is a very common side effect of the drugs that target the epidermal growth factor receptor, with approximately 3/4 of patients who receive the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhbitor tarceva/erlotinib experiencing skin toxicity. Similar skin toxicities are also seen, but a bit less commonly, with the very similar drug iressa/gefitinib, and also frequently with erbitux/cetuximab, a monoclonal antibody that is less well studied in lung cancer.

General Shaving Tips
Some help if you have dry skin and use and electric razorAs far as electric shavers go, I've used the Philips Norelco BodyGroom, and the Seiko Cleancut. From the standpoint of receiving an irritation free shave, the Seiko Cleancut is the better of the two shavers if you use it right, and is probably better suited for women. It's a good maintenance shaver, and it is quite. I have mixed feelings about the fact that it runs off a C battery. I'd like to see rechargeable version. If you use the Cleancut, remember to tilt the razor while making small circular motions. You should also use it on dry skin lightly powdered with talcum, feminine deodorant powder, or even cornstarch. Use of such a powder will facilitate smooth movement across the skin, and will provide better results.

Another Parenting Discovery
Pregnancy and child birth can create many dry skin conditions.
A few days ago, however, I had a few extra seconds when drying off after my shower to take a closer look (and when I say a few extra seconds, I’m being truthful. My shower time is always a delicate balance between blissful solitude and hearing the babies screaming in the next room while Andrea yells over the screaming to find out what’s taking me so long). But I digress. What I noticed upon careful inspection was not your typical dry skin.

Dry Gene
Two scientists in the UK have discovered the gene that results in dry skin, causing eczema and asthma. The discovery could also wipeout asthma. The scientists working on the project were a dermatologist and a skin disorder specialist. This is onsidered a breakthrough as skin diseases are widespread, just as asthma is. Personally I am happy to learn this, as I often suffer from dry itchy skin….It’ll make me type faster here.

Here Comes the Sun
With cold weather, dry skin.
Today the sun came out, and it was GLORIOUS. Cold, but lovely. Everyone was MUCH more cheerful, and I saw a glimpse of what spring will bring. Also, I’m hoping spring will help clear up the dry skin on my arms that I am calling eczema despite Justine’s caution regarding self-diagnosis. Well, the spring and the Eucerin shower gel and the baby oil. Maybe between them it’ll clear up.

Adventures In Soapmaking
If you have dry skin, you might want to check out making your own soap.
But I had a number of problems with MP. First of all, even though I was buying a very high-quality base from an online-supplier, I still couldn’t use the soap in the shower. I have very, very sensitive, dry skin. I have struggled with eczema my entire life, and soap had always bothered me. My MP soap drove my skin nuts in the shower. I could use it on my hands, but not in the shower. Kind of a bummer, actually, really a bummer. (Just a note, people with normal skin can usually use MP soap without a problem. My skin is just too picky.)

Wash Your Hands ... Carefully
Who knew that hand washing could lead to dry skin and infections!
Studies have shown that a reason oft-repeated by healthcare workers as to why they aren’t always compliant with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s “Guideline for Hand Hygiene in Healthcare Settings”1 is because frequent washing causes dry, cracked skin. That’s not just an aesthetic problem; it’s an occupational hazard for themselves and their patients. Cracks in dry skin provide perfect hiding places for pathogens that can be transferred from Healthcare workers’ (HCWs) hands to sick patients in the blink of an eye.

Yes, There's Velveeta In My Refrigerator
A good post on the dietary needs of the skin-challenged family.
If you blog about skin care, you can submit your post to Blog Carnival with the submit button at the top of the left column. The other day I went to the local health food store to get a few things like some of these and some of this. You see, some of our offspring have some extremely sensitive eating issues. With the most severe being the youngest with his allergy to dairy. When he eats dairy the poor little cowboy looks as if he’s contracted a very bad case of leprosy. It starts with basic dry skin, turning red, then swelling just above the level of the skin surface with blisters and finally each one ruptures into tiny little oozing, scabbing, discustingness. (Yes, I just made up that last word and I think it’s a good one.) This is severe eczema with secondary infections.

Vaseline
It's messy, but VaselineWhen I finally got home, I was greeted by a very shiny Nathan. I regret that I didn’t take a picture, but I was immediately up to my elbows in more Vaseline than anyone should ever have coated on their body. He’s done this before, but I thought I had the jar well hidden. Eric mocks me for even keeping the greasy stuff in the house but absolutely nothing soothes my cracked dry skin in the winter like Vaseline can. Nathan was so greasy we could have put him in the bathtub and simply watched him disappear as he slithered down the drain. There was Vaseline on the barstools, the kitchen counters, and yes, all over the sofas. I’m still scrubbing. Let’s put it this way, my sofas are beginning to form a “patina”, yes, that’s what we’ll say all the spots are. Charming, enviable patina.

Infected Feet
This is disgusting skin care ... but it worked!
The maggots on the foot were eating all of the lady’s dead cells. They were cleaning her feet for months so no dead cells were left. The disease the woman had was diabetes and ulcers. The purpose of the maggots was to clean her out. What the maggots does is it cleans parts of your body without blood so what the maggots were doing was they were eating all of the dead skin that was left. An infection was leaving dry skin on her foot which is why the maggots were all in one spot.

Acne Treatment And Dry Skin
The skin care treatment took care of the acne, but left dry skin.
The antibiotic from my dermatologist appears to be working. I hardly have any new pimples, and the ones that I do have are little and near the hairline on my forehead, which is where I usually get them. But then last weekend, I started to notice that I was getting some dry skin around my eyes. Which presented a problem, since I don’t own any type of moisturizer that one would use on one’s face. Don’t yell at me for this, I know it’s a major girl no-no, but come on. Why does an already oily-faced person need more moisture?

Mixed Feelings
This post brings up the issue of HIV and other disease transmission through dry skin. If HIV transmission did occur through dry skin from small amounts of exposure, you would see many, many more cases of HIV.
What the issue is about, is the fact that all public service people, paramedics, police, firemen, and medical personnel are instructed to use covered protection when dealing with patients who are bleeding. What the CDC does say, is that blood products can get into a persons body through cuts, cracks from dry skin, open sores.

Eczema
At it's best, eczema causes dry skin. At it's worst, eczema can be a debilitating disease.
Since birth I have suffered from Chronic Eczema. Not to be confused with Eczema that looks like moderately to bad dry skin, but Chronic Eczema. It’s a dermititis that I wish I never had to deal with, but I do anyways. I have been searching for a cure my entire life in books, in clinical journals, and on the web. I must confess, there is no cure for eczema, but there are options to keep it at bay and live with it easily.

Shaving And Chlorine
A summertime skin care predicament:
One reason I (we) didn't shave often is because shaving required the use of lotion. The swimming on-season is mainly in the winter and during the winter, the humidity is roughly -12% all the time, which effectively means that even the slightest dry skin results in a leper-like appearance, with skin falling off every which way. The problem is that the use of 99.9% of the lotions commercially available was strictly prohibited because they significantly enhanced the eau de chlorine that we all wore daily--to the point that you could smell me coming...

When I was in L.A., I told a bemused Ezra and Kate about my personal hygiene regimen. Stupid Spritzers
I agree that a good moisturizerI've never quite understood the appeal of those facial mists - people squirting Evian in their faces (straight from the bottle or the brand's own cosmetic product) never really made sense to me. Even if you've got extremely dry skin, spritzing water on it seems to be as clever as licking chapped lips during winter. Wouldn't it only make things worse? Nevermind looking like an idiot, spraying oneself in the face with water - beauty means adopting practices which tend to border on the silly-looking (toe dividers, anyone?).

An exfoliating scrubIt turns out that one Industrious Mister Who Wishes to Have Less Dry Skin turned, like the good techie he is, to Google to solve his skincare problems. (About.com is said to be particularly helpful, by the way. Take notes, ladies!) After I got the giggles under control - what is more adorable than a cute boy being a bit ernest and a bit concerned about skincare for the first...

Tried And Tested
Lots of bloggers seem to like the Clarins productsOne tried-and-tested part of my bathing repertoire, and one which never fails to deliver the goods, is Clarins Gommage Exfoliant ($33, or £21 - yes, we get ripped off in Britain). I would never call this exfoliating scrub easy to rinse off, but it does what it says on the tin: attaches itself to bits of dry skin and removes those suckers quite effectively. This is not to say, though, that there aren't cheaper products out there that accomplish this. I've just never tried any of them.

Good Fats Prevent Chronic Disease
Know your good fats! You can enjoy good food and skin care at the same time.
Read the whole thing. If you have dry skin, stiffness, concentration problems, or hormonal imbalances you may be lacking in a type of fat that is essential to health. Essential fatty acids are those fats that the body needs; yet cannot synthesize itself. Many types of fat are unhealthy fats, yet some are beneficial and necessary. In fact, cutting all fat from the diet is actually harmful to health.
Omega-6 fatty acids are found in many vegetable oils such as borage, flaxseed, walnut, soy, corn, sunflower, and are especially abundant in evening primrose oil. These omega-6 acids help to soften dry skin and relax tense muscles.

Wedding Day Beauty Tips
Wedding days are full of stress, but no need to get crazy with skin care. Here's what you need to know:
A very clean and natural look is recommended for today’s bride. One of the best ways to achieve this look is to know your skin type. It is important to use the correct foundation for your skin type and color. If you have oily skin, choose a water-based matte foundation that will not add unwanted oil to your skin. If you have dry skin, then a fluid foundation may benefit your skin with its added oils.

Pregnancy and Dry Skin
Our bodies go crazy during pregnancy, including dry skin. Have some moisturizer available!
In one week I’ve transformed from being little pregnant girl, to a giant ball of gross. Every morning, Ian wakes up to me blowing my nose and coughing up phlegm. I’ve been told this won’t go away. Also, it was so hot at work, I was sweating like crazy, I put my hair up in a cheerleader-ponytail, was told to put on a student focus T-shirt, and the other designers setup a giant fan, blowing directly on me. Another thing, I woke up one morning, hurting all over with extrememly dry skin, I had been scratching all night. I moisturize...

D-d-d-dan-druff
Skin care is especially hard when you travel. Here's a blogger dealing with a bad case of Beijing dandruff.
When I got to China, one of the first things I noticed was that an overwhelming number of Chinese people have dandruff. I didn’t think it about it much but took it to be a genetic thing or some anomaly due to a different attitude towards cleanliness, different shampoo, hard water… Half way through last semester, I noticed that I had acquired, through good fortune perhaps, small patches of dry skin on my scalp. OK, fine. These things happen, Beijing does happen to be extra dry. No biggie. I bought some Chinese dandruff shampoo and considered my case of itchy, dry scalp conquered. I think that Chinese crap only made it worse. When I got to RI over break, I bought the usual Head and Shoulders. I figured that if that stuff can kill a small animal, it should be able to take care of a little case of dandruff. Wrong again. In PA, I even bought some leave in treatment. I think it just added fuel to the fire.

The Four Basics of Skin Care
- Sunscreen: It's a must, essential for preventing sun damage and lowering your risk of developing skin cancer. Many skin care lines have facial moisturizers with SPF already included; they offer a more luxurious, makeup-friendly texture than traditional sunscreens. If you use only one product, sunscreen should be it. A lotion like Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Lotion with SPF 15 moisturizes, protects with SPF, and smoothes skin with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and vitamin C -- practically the perfect all-purpose face lotion.
- Eye cream: The skin under your eyes is more delicate and dry than the skin on the rest of your face. It's wise to invest in an eye cream, which treats the eye area with more emollient moisturizers. Some eye creams even claim to minimize dark circles and temporarily tighten fine lines.
- Retinols: If you're concerned with wrinkles and pigmentation spots, a face cream with retinol (a derivative of vitamin A) can help. Use it in place of your daytime, SPF moisturizer after you wash your face at night.
- Body lotion with alpha-hydroxy acids: A lotion with skin-sloughing AHAs smoothes your whole body, including hands, feet, arms, and legs. For tough dry spots, apply extra lotion before bed and let it soak in while you sleep.

Winter Skin Care
Here are some great tips on Health care from Dr. Sarah Myers at Duke University:
Winter can be tough on skin. Cold temperatures, low humidity and dry indoor heating combine to rob the skin of moisture, leaving it dry and flaky, said Sarah Myers, M.D., dermatologist at Duke University Medical Center, who offers the following tips for winter skin care.
- Shorten baths or showers -- Long, hot baths can eventually strip the skin of lipids, or moisturizing fats. Frequent long showers or baths do not add moisture but take away protection.
- Use moisturizer -- Choose soap or cleanser with oils and emollients. After bathing, pat dry, then replenish with an overall body moisturizer. Oils can also be added to bath water, which can penetrate and nourish the skin. But they can also make the tub slippery, so be especially careful getting out.
- Apply toners and astringents sparingly – These are liquids used after cleaning, just before applying a moisturizer. Because they are typically alcohol-based, they can dry the skin. Look for products with low alcohol content.
- Don't forget the sunscreen – Many products are a combination of sunscreen and moisturizer. Usually the recommended products have an SPF of 15. Most people are in and out during the day, and casual sun exposure adds up. This is one of the best daily products people can use.
- Rejuvenate skin – Many people use topical night creams and other cosmetic products containing retinoids. These can help reduce facial lines, wrinkles and age spots. Look for products containing mineral oil or other moisturizing agents. Products containing higher levels of these ingredients are available only by prescription.
- Control environmental factors – Humidifying the environment can help replenish moisture. Consider a humidifier in your bedroom at night, when you're spending most of your time there. Reduce exposure to cigar and cigarette smoke, which can speed the skin's aging process.
- Stimulate and exfoliate – Rubbing the skin's surface daily with a scrub or washcloth stimulates the skin and removes dead cells, which can clog the pores. However, the process can strip some of the lipids that are integral to keeping your skin moist, especially during the winter, if overdone.

Under the Hair Dryer
This blog is beauty tip central. And funny. Here's an excerpt.
Yesterday I finally got my hair done. I’ve needed to do something for a while, as I hadt a two-inch black hole growing in the crown of my frosted blond head. So, since today is my birthday, I decided it was time for a new look. I chose some lowlights, which is what you need to do after repeated highlights turn your hair into something resembling Dolly Parton. So, I got some dark brown streaked back in, to blend it all and make me look a bit less freakish.
Speaking of freakish, as I sat under the hair dryer with strips of tinfoil sticking up all over my head, I looked around me (as much as I could without my glasses) at my fellow Martians and thought how crazy it is, the things we do to ourselves in the quest for “beauty.” My technophobe meditation group friend is the owner of the shop, and she also does “permanent makeup.” Yes, she tattoos eyeliner on your lids. If God gave you skimpy eyebrows, she can work a miracle. I’ve got Brooke Shields eyebrows which I constantly have to weed, so that particular service never tempted me. But I did think about the eyeliner thing a while back. But, since I wear glasses, it didn’t seem worth it.

Dry Skin Tips
Great tips for dry skin.
• Dry Skin
Go easy if your skin is dry or sensitive. If your skin feels dry, rough and flaky when you touch it , it needs extra tender loving care with the following routine:
1) Cream off make-up and dirt with a super-fatted cleansing cream, morning and night. Apply all creams and lotions with an upward motion. It's stimulating to the skin and helps prevent sagging. Note: Vitamin E oil is also known to slow the aging of skin. Dab it on problem areas that show signs of aging.
2) Moisturize in the morning and before bedtime to keep your skin soft and smooth and to protect it against the additional loss of moisture.
3) Take warm, not hot, showers. Lots of hot water can drain moisture out of your skin, leaving it older-looking, itchy and dry. Be sure to use moisturizing lotion after bathing.

Crisco Skin Care?
Crisco? Why not Ariva skin care or other fine skin care products? I mean, rilly!
Yeah, I know it's gross, but give me a chance here. When you do a lot of walking in the cold weather your legs get mighty dry. And your skin gets itchy. So itchy, in fact, that you can't stop scratching it. Regular moisturizer doesn't work. You begin to think you have a strange skin disease. You scratch until you bleed in places. And your housemate, a nurse practitioner, recommends Crisco. Gross. But it works. After a shower, regular moisturizer. Then lock it in with Crisco or Vaseline. The itching stops. And pretty soon your skin is so smooth and soft and supple that you feel like you've been let in on some kind of sorority sister secret. I'm sticking with it (in moderation).
