Blue Day At Beach
It’s a little surprising that we missed some spots, too. L.A. Mommy bought this new sunscreen that comes out in a different color, other than white, so you’ll be able to notice which spots you miss. But she made the mistake of buying the blue version. Now, I don’t know if you can picture what it looks like to put something blue all over your skin, so I’ll give you a hint:

Better Sunscreen Labels?
New sunscreen labeling may make it easier to find the right sunscreen for you.
Your sunscreen may have a high SPF, but that number only measures its protection from one ultraviolet light, UVB.

Long Blocks
I hear you already: “I hope you brought your sunscreen with you.” Well, yes, I did, and by “yes” I mean “no.” So, since I hadn’t realized that in that part of Phoenix, “one block” apparently meant a distance just shy of a mile and a half, I got to the store about two and a half hours later with a REALLY good tan, the nice lobster-y red kind. But there were some really nice basses there, so I had that going for me. In all honesty, I didn’t really get burnt badly, but I was smart enough to catch a cab back to the hotel.

A Deadly Scourge
Good skin care and sunscreen can help with sun and mosquitoes.
Like HIV/AIDS, this dengue doesn’t have an anti-viral cure and thus prevention is the key. I layer on the mosquito spray over the sunscreen and carry it with me to reapply when we are out in the communities. My landlord has finished the kitchen, which used to be a humming haven for hoards of mosquitoes, and it is now screened in and bug free. But everywhere you look there are old tires with water in them, buckets, and pilas full of standing water.

Vacation Burn
No one else got burnedThis is the day I got sizzled! I got one of the worst sunburns I’ve ever had. I always end up getting burned at the beach. Always! It’s so easy to underestimate the effects of the sun. I keep thinking I don’t feel like I’m burning, so I must not be. I should know better, after a lifetime of going to these beaches, and a lifetime of getting burned badly. But, NO! I never learn! G was covered with sunscreen, but he has Philip’s skin tone, so he doesn’t burn easily anyway.

Rainbow Of Holidays
From a clever blog post coloring every day of the week, Ruby Tuesday and the forgottenRuby Tuesday- This ancient holiday was celebrated in a pop tune, but the lyrics were purposefully vague to allay suspicions of the authorities. It is usually celebrated on the first Tuesday after Memorial Day weekend, and most prevalent in the Northeast. This day celebrates all of the people who have been covered up all winter and forgotten to put sunscreen on, and the misery they endure on their first day back at work, when they have to wear uncomfotable clothes on top of their sunburned bottoms.

Heatwave
If you're outside during a heatwave, don't forget the sunscreenIt’s hard to do anything in this weather. Even sitting kind of wears me out. I think mayeb I should lie down. The thought of throwing on a load of laundry fills me with dread. (As it should, we’re supposed to be conserving energy.) I barely eat anything, except a slice of watermelon here and there, maybe a strawberry. My skin is constantly sweaty and dirty. I took a cold shower this morning and was comfortable for five minutes or so. Then, suddenly, I was completely covered in a thin sheen of sweat and sunscreen and grime. The stuff under my nails has to be seen to be believed.

Pool
Forgot the sunscreenToday, whilst my colleagues were roasting in the jam factory I went off with Jo to our local outdoor pool in Hinksey - wonderful, absolutely wonderful. Other Aldates people were there…piggy in the middle with a weird small floppy frisbee…chips…icecream….and sunburn - yes, I’m silly, I didn’t put any sunscreen on and got just a tad burnt. Ah well, it was worth it.

Check The Label
You should wear sunscreenExperts are now saying that good ole sunscreen (no matter the SPF) may not do what it was designed to do, protect you from skin cancer. Apparently you don't need a sunburn to get skin cancer, and although sunscreens efficiently screen out UVB rays, not all screens are created equal.

Bearded Bride
What they mean by this, but they daren’t say it because in the Crazy World of Cosmo Bride it isn’t even an issue, is “Girl, do something about the beard”. Unfortunately it’s something that many of us have to deal with, and, unfortunately, it’s in my genes. So I’ve tried plucking, creams, sanding, but the only thing that works is waxing. But, of course, the Cosmo Bride has not one imperfection nor beardy growth, so she’s just told to exfoliate regularly and slap on the sunscreen.

Burned Toes
The problem with sunscreenWell we are back from the beach. It was a good time had by all, nice and relaxing. I followed the doctor's instructions and I have to say that I didn't have any huge breakout like I normally would. I may have even gotten a shade darker in the face region but that could just be my mind playing tricks on me. Of course, I didn't think to put any sunscreen on my feet, which got really burned.

Trade-offs
Some health trade-offs ... and, no, we don't skip the sunscreenWe - as individuals, consumers, patients - constantly engage in health tradeoffs. We forgo sunscreen because we'd like a tan, even though it increases our risk of skin cancer. We eat french fries even after a second bypass operation because a burger just isn't a burger without them. We drive seven hours to visit relatives for the holidays, rather than fly, because airplane tickets are too expensive. All of these decisions represent common enough instances in which we are willing to trade an increased probability of harm to ourselves for some other good, e.g., an attractive tan, a pleasurable meal, or some extra money in the bank.

Memory Lane
We haven't heard Baz Luhrmann's Sunscreen song!
So I am tooling around on the web tonight and I ran across Chris Rock’s “No Sex in the Champaign Room” which for those of you who don’t know is a spoof on Baz Luhrmann’s Sunscreen song. So then of course, I had to go and pull out that old piece of trash. Which then leads to more nostalgia. So what songs take you back to those days? Lets see here, Chumbawamba Tubthumping, Eve 6 Inside Out, The Real Slim Shady by Eminem, Lump by The Presidents of the United States of America. O man, classics. One day my grandkids gonna be on my knee and he is going to ask me two things. One, did you really listen to this stuff, and two how the hell did you elect Bush, not ounce but twice?Ok, so maybe I am being a little harsh on the music, but you are going to have to answer the second question. I know what my answer is. “I didn’t vote in the first election, and I voted for the other guy the second time.” Whats your answer? What music did you listen to? Talk to me!

When Will I Learn?
It's always sunscreenSo I spend the day at the UNLV game on Saturday when ends up being a 13-10 win for the Rebels. (Thank you Sergio Aguayo!!!) Like a moron I didn’t think to wear any sunscreen for a game… at noon… in the desert… Lord how did I not see this coming? Four hours later I can feel the left side of my face radiating back all the heat it has absorbed over the course of the day. Only the one half though because I am sitting on the south side of the stadium. (30 yard line, 2nd row, only $85 for the whole year) To top it all off I have this area where the sunglasses are that isn’t burnt. I look like half a raccoon now.

Take Me Out To The Ballgame
Shade may be the best sunscreen.
It was hot. Really Really Hot. We covered our very pale selves in maximum strength sunscreen and wore light pants and white shirts. Since we had our student IDs, tickets were half price. The only exception to this is the dollar tickets, which are a dollar no matter what. However, we figured it was worth an extra six-fifty each to sit in the shade. As it turns out, it would have been worth even more than that!

The Outing
Good to see sunscreenThis weekend we have a huge camping trip planned with lots of our friends and their kids and dogs. It’s going to be a blast. All the women were even smart and came up with a shopping list we divided up so we don’t waste food and we can all have the same meals. Rachel is planning some craft projects for the kids and I know Tully will love hanging out with his friend Kietz and she’ll get to meet Pete and Molly’s dog McGruff. We’ll be on a lake so we’re buying floaties to float around on the water. I’ll definitely be putting on sunscreen so I don’t get burned again like I did when kayaking. Brandon and Liz are bringing their boat, so we’ll probably go out on the boat a bit. I’m really looking forward to it.

Love this new skin care term: "Vampire Sunscreen."
- Sunday I became lobster woman. I must have killed too many braincells watching “Devil’s Rejects” because I decided it was a good idea to just use SPF15 while spending 2 hours with the family at the pool. I normally wear SPF666 (you know, vampire sunscreen). Now I am suffering.

Hiking With Your Blog
If you don't remember to put sunscreenThis blog spent the weekend climbing in the lovely desert of Arizona. In case you were wondering, blogs make horrible climbing partners and I'm leaving this particular blog home next time. It was approximately 110F all weekend and I managed to get sunburned the first day. Apparently, this sunscreen must be re-applied every 2-3 hours to be effective, especially when one has Scandinavian skin that will get sunburned by standing too close to the microwave. I was both unaware of this stipulation and unwilling to stop the climbing while I slathered on more sunscreen. As a result, 62% of my body resembles a fully cooked lobster. The 38% of me that was covered by clothing, sunglasses and tape is still ghostly white. I am a human candy cane.

Self Tanning Tips
An alternative to sitting in the sun with gobs of sunscreenWHEN SHOULD I APPLY THE SELF TANNING PRODUCT? – Since most self-tanning lotions have no sunscreen for protection outdoors, the best time to use self-tanners is at night before going to bed. If done earlier, allow a minimum of two hours and test for staining before putting back on your regular clothes. Note that if your lotion contains extra coloring formula or if you’re using a spray, staining could be a major issue and you won’t to go to bed and stain bedding; so use these types of products earlier in the evening or when you have more time...

It's Beach Weather
Memorial Day is here and so are the beaches! Time for sunscreenHeal the Bay released it's annual Beach Report Card yesterday. Their conclusion? It's been a bad year for LA's best natural feature, mostly on account of the record rains. (Rain flushes guck from all over, down storm drains and creeks and out to the ocean.) Happily, when the weather is warm and the sky is clear, we're clear to swim at most SoCal beaches. Time to bring on the sunscreen.

Get Some Color
A new study says a little bit of sun everyday reduces the chance for cancer. You still want some sunscreenGirls were more likely than boys to wear sunscreen (53 percent versus 33 percent) and to say they were at least somewhat careful about protecting themselves from the sun (59 percent versus 36 percent).
No one is suggesting that people fry on a beach. But many scientists believe that "safe sun" - 15 minutes or so a few times a week without sunscreen - is not only possible but helpful to health.

Throw Away Sunscreen?
I think good skin care still includes sunscreenDermatologists have long preached that sunscreens are needed to prevent skin cancer. Now some scientists are questioning that because vitamin D increasingly seems important for preventing and treating many types of cancer.
Indeed, some researchers think that splashing on sunscreen may actually contribute to far more cancer deaths than it prevents.

Use Your Umbrella
A good alternative to sunscreen? A hat or, even better, an umbrella.
In French, they are called "parasols". Roughly translated, that means "stops skin cancer".Now, being of Eastern Europe descent, my fair skin doesn’t take too well to the massive amounts of sunshine that comes during the summer here. I’ve tried to find a large brimmed straw hat, but they are all too large for my little head, and it’s hard to put sunscreen on myself, so the back of my neck and face have turned a fine shade of pink.

Postcard from Boracay
No matter who you go to the beach with, slather on the sunscreenSince I would need superpowers just to convince them to go out to the beach or do anything, I had decided to do some things on my own so I could at least have a modicum of fun. When you’re there, you don’t stay indoors! You slather on the sunscreen (or tanning oil, whichever you prefer) and enjoy whatever this beautiful strip of beach has to offer. I ended up hanging with the gays and the guys who were oodles of fun to be with. We watched the sunset, swam for hours, ogled at beautiful men when I was with the gays, ogled at the beautiful women...

Men's Skin Care
Moisturizer with sunscreenThe best thing that you can do to your skin is to keep it clean and to always moisturize. You’ll find different skin care products such as anti-wrinkle and anti pimple creams, anti-aging agents, bleaching creams, sunscreen, facial scrub, facial whitening soaps, and a lot more. Even though, all soaps do cleanse, other soaps may be harsh to your skin. In this case, mild soaps are most preferable but if you are happy with what you are using, you can just stick to that. Also, follow cleansing skin care with a good moisturizer and make it a part of...

Farewell Fjords, Goodbye Glaciers, So Long Snow
In arctic climes, you want a strong sunscreen product like Blue Lizard Australian Suncream Lotion, SPF 30 , Face - 5 fl ozAnother way to tell you’re south as South can be is the UV warning signs posted around town. The ozone layer is deteriorating at a rapid pace and here in Southern South America it is affecting this area more then any other inhabited area on earth. The hole in the ozone hovers over this area and affects people whether the sun is shining or the clouds cover the sky and it’s advisable to wear sunscreen and hats at all times.

No-AD Sunscreen
No-Ad Sunblock LotionYou've all seen that No-AD sunscreen stuff in the stores, right? Right. It's not as inexpensive as it used to be, but it's still cheaper than the big brand name products which makes it a bargain in comparison.

Summer's Coming ...
Don't forget your sunscreenHowever, I could have used a bit of Darrell's enlightenment, because while finishing the book today, I sat outside in Seattle's gorgeous sun, and despite living 30-some years realizing that sun can indeed get you sunburned, I forgot to put any sunscreen on until it was too late. I now have sunburned knees and feet. Ouch.

Sunscreen Numbering
Keep an eye out for better skin care info. More useful sunscreenI spoke with a dermatologist today who gave me a heads-up about the numbering system on sunscreen: the days of 15, 30, 45, 60, etc., will be gone soon enough. The numbering system will change, though I’m not sure what the value of the new system, which will be 15, 30 and 30+, from what I understand, will offer in the way of a consumer benefit.

Fake is OK
Some might think fake is terrible, but what about a fake tan? Might be smart skin care!
NNow, being the fair-skinned, fair-haired type that whiles away the winter in a northern clime, I’m a bit phobic about sun exposure. Skin cancer really is no joke and besides, no one wants those icky wrinkles. Alas, though I am a total solar-phobe, I do love the beach and frequently find myself bursting to go running on a nice, sunny day. Therefore, I sunscreen liberally. Personally, I like the Peter Thomas Roth oil-free sunblocks since my skin tends to be oily in warmer weather (Thanks for sharing, Elizabeth!). I use the Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion ($37) for everyday wear or the Oil-free Sunblock SPF 30 ($25) for the beach or sports.

Skin Cancer In The Family
If skin cancer runs in your family, all the more reason to slather on the sunscreen skin care!
Complicated how? Well first you have the sun-filled sky…ahhhh radiant, or is it radioactive? I cringe at the need to slather us in sunscreen. Ems and hubby pinked-out once already. Everyone ought to be careful, but the kids and I need to kick it up a notch. My sister died of melanoma cancer at age 42. It hits me in the gut to think of it, and Sis wasn’t a sun goddess. Guiltily I push hats, glasses and screen…easier said than done. And you don’t want to answer whiny WHYS with, “Cuz your aunt died from the sun’s rays…now let’s go out and have some fun!”

Adult Acne Treatment - Simple Solutions
Good summary of skin care treatment for adults.
Use non-comedogenic products. Non-comedogenic basically means - not likely to block the pores of the skin, or cause blackheads or acne. There are many non-comedogenic products available today, including, makeup, foundation, moisturizers, sunscreen, lip stick, etc. If it’s something that you apply to your skin you should be able to find a non-comedogenic version. In fact, you can also find non-comedogenic and medicated makeup with acne fighting ingredients like, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and sulfur. These products shouldn’t clog your pores and should help treat acne.

Complicated Relationship: Sun Exposure and Cancer
The "sun bad, shade good" way of life doesn't seem to be completely true. Skin care may include some exposure to sun after all.
It's not what you think. This editorial in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute highlights mounting evidence that sun exposure may reduce the risk of certain kinds of cancer, possibly via an effect on vitamin A metabolism. In addition, there's data suggesting that when melanoma develops on a sun-exposed area (rather than an area where the sun don't usually shine, like between your toes), it's less likely to kill you. Why? Because the sunlight itself probably...

Sunscreen Breakdown
Important sunscreen tip!
Don't rely on sunscreen alone to protect you from the sun's UV rays. According to these researchers, some products are subject to degradation by the sun. In particular, products with 5-octyl methoxycinnamate seemed to fall apart quickly when exposed to sunslight. This compounds another problem: most people use only about one third as much sunscreen as they really need.

Spring Is Here: Put on Your Sunscreen!
Just spent an hour or two riding around running errands. Nice that it’s finally warming up, and I’m gonna have to start thinking about sunscreen again. Going to take my son to a friend’s BD party later on; time to toss the backrest on. He loves to ride, doesn’t get a chance to very often. Life is good.

Sunscreen Advice
The alpha and omega of skin care:
Wear sunscreen.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.
But trust me on the sunscreen.

Skiing? Don't Forget the Sunscreen!
My face has never been this sunburned in my entire life. Our very first day of snowboarding, I forgot to put on sunscreen in the morning, it wasn’t until after lunch that I remembered! Boy did I make a mistake. The rest of the 3 days, I put on plenty! But between the sun & wind all week- my nose feels like leather, my lips are blistered, I am peeling, and it is just so uncomfortable!

Schools and Sunscreen
This seems like a very odd school skin care regulation that needs to be changed.
Those reports from Bristol, England last summer ("It's sunny, stay inside", Jul. 6) turn out not to be an isolated case: in Montgomery County, Maryland, ordinary sunscreen lotion is considered a medication for which a doctor's note is required, while in adjacent Howard County, a student who wishes to use sun protection cream must bring in a parent's note and the bottle must be kept with the school nurse. The American Cancer Society, which favors wide sunscreen use as a protective against...

Ways To Boost Sun Protection
Sunscreen is good, but it's not your only friend in the fight against skin cancer.
The best way to avoid skin cancer is to stay out of the sun between 10 AM and 3 PM, choose clothing that covers your skin, and apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.

Cream Eliminates Some Skin Cancers
The manufacturer of the topical cream Curaderm-BEC claims it can eliminate some skin cancers caused by sunbed use.
Dermatologists at Royal London Hospital and nine other United Kingdom skin cancer treatment centers have now confirmed that Curaderm-BEC cream can eliminate all traces of non melanoma skin cancer. Treatment is available for damage from both indoor and outdoor UV exposure.
Curaderm-BEC consists of a patented biochemical (BEC) which is extracted from plants and a specialized cream formulation. Keratolytic and other agents in the cream soften and peel of the first layer of skin allowing the anti-cancer bio-chemical BEC to reach deep into the affected skin tissue. The cream is applied topically twice a day to BCC or SCC non melanoma skin cancer lesions or sun spots.
Clinical research and over twenty years of medical research and information on the side effects of both sun bed and outdoor tanning is available online at www.curaderm.net. This includes the product’s coverage in prestigious medical publications such as Drugs of Today and Cancer letters.

Two Kids, Two Days: Bring the Sunscreen
When you travel with kids, bring the sunscreen times three.
It was chilly and raw when we left New York, sunny and 80 when we got to Florida. We shed our coats, put on sunscreen, and became tourists.
First stop: Parrot Jungle's nursery, to see twin orangutans. These baby apes have diapers, toys, climbing bars, and more attention from their 24-hour keepers than some human children. Other highlights: an albino alligator, a petting zoo where we fed baby goats from bottles, and a picturesque flock of pink flamingos. Unfortunately, we missed Parrot Jungle's famous liger -- half-lion, half-tiger; he's only there on weekends.

Chemical Society Reports on Better Sunscreen Ingredients
The Chemical Society reports on advances in skin care with improved sunscreen formulation.
Antioxidant mixture may improve protection against skin cancer — Despite the availability of topical sunscreens, skin cancer is on the rise. A group of chemists says that adding a mixture of antioxidants to sunscreen may help enhance its protection. In animal studies, they found that a mixture of various topical antioxidants was more effective than single antioxidants in preventing the formation of skin tumors induced by ultraviolet light. In another study, the research team found that black tea, green tea, grape seed and cranberry extracts were all promising antioxidants for fighting skin cancer when applied topically.

Perfumers Bottle Scent of Beach
Who ever thought the smell of suncreen on skin would be the inspiration for a perfume... That must have been what fragrance manufacturers had in mind when they came up with some of the hot scents introduced this season.
Ahhh, the smell of the crisp blue water lapping against the white sand. The scent of your sun-kissed skin, glowing with coconut-tinged sunscreen. The aroma of that frothy pina colada with the pineapple garnish.
