The Mystery Of Morgellons
Will supplements cure the mysterious Morgellons?
Long online discussions ramble on about the latest conspiracy theories that cause the disease – poisonous chemicals produced by the government and spread by jet contrails, so-called chem trails; aliens; artificially intelligent nanotechnology; genetic engineering; or a government bioweapon gone awry. Others debate the latest expensive cure-alls – antibiotics, antifungal creams, vitamin supplements, liquid silver, food-grade diatomaceous earth, deworming medication meant for cattle.

Herbal Weight Loss Therapies Attacked
Do herbal supplements help with weight loss?
According to some obesity experts, herbal therapies just can’t work because they “cannot beat the body’s efforts to conserve fat.” In large scale trials time and time again the herbal and vitamin supplements failed to do much of anything for the body, and in some cases people began relying on them and were starving their bodies of the nutrients it needed.

Alfalfa supplements have been associated with the activation of dormant SLE as well. SLE is an autoimmune disease, which can damage the kidneys and other organs.

Working Out
Check back later for more on health, diet, and supplements.
I’m also working on a serious fitness regime. I have retained a personal trainer, and I work out 7 days per week, twice per day, and am eating very properly. Weight-loss and fitness are things that I’ve written about in the past, but I’m going to start writing more about them. Much more. Not only am I going to write about the mental aspect of fitness, I am also going to write about the physical aspect. This means I’ll be writing about exercises and foods and supplements and all of that. I’ll be creating some new categories for that, and I’m certain that you’ll find this material interesting.

Pre-Pregnant
From a post on pregnancy, this bit about folic acid supplementsAlso, the focus on folic acid puzzles me. I did only the most cursory google search to see what the story is with it. I don’t doubt that it’s critically necessary to making new people, but why is it so hard to get enough folic acid in your diet? Where could you get it naturally that you wouldn’t have to take supplements? Spinach, quinoa, beans, nuts, healthy vegetables. Oh. So basically, it’s in virtually everything but in what America is eating. Not a single sentence in this WP report mentions diet or nutrition.

From a blogger figuring out the right weight and supplements for her pregnancy.
I was genuinely surprised. She then gave me some last advice regarding vegetables and DHA-rich foods and supplements, made sure that I would follow the doctor’s recommendations, made sure that I would exercise and stay strong during the pregnancy and childbirth, and then I was on my way.

Lightbulb Turns On
After Duodenal Switch Procedure, coping with weight, diet, and supplements.
I do so fight for control when I know – or should know- that the DS does it’s own thing. The only control I have has to do with eating well and ensuring my supplements are taken. Mmmmm…something I just can’t swing back into – I must get it together very soon now else I will be playing with fire. It’s odd how a break from the Vits has disrupted things – it’ll take some effort now to build it back into a habit, but hopefully it won’t take too long.

Misleading Nutrition News Reports
Click through for a critical review of nutrition claims and dietary supplements.
Here is a commentary by Dr. Stephen Chaney, professor of nutrition, biochemistry and biophysics at the Univ. of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, medical school. Dr. Chaney is a warm, gracious man (yes, I know him personally ;-) ) and a cancer researcher who has published 80 papers in peer-reviewed medical journals as well as two chapters on nutrition for one of the leading biochemistry textbooks for medical students. His informed perspective is always helpful in separating fact from fiction in the news reports about supplements and dietary recommendations.

Canadian Politics
Some questions on health and supplements for the Canadian readers out there.
Will your party scrap Schedule A of the Health Canada Act, written over 50 years ago, which consists of a list of virtually all diseases known to humanity and mandates that they can only be treated by drugs and not by supplements or nutritional medicine? Schedule A made it a criminal offence--in the 1980's several doctors lost their licenses in Canada for using nutritional support as an adjunct to standard medical practice. Will your party adopt the US law which takes them out of the Codex process completely; that the assessments of supplements be done at arm's length from the industry as ordered by the International Court; that the upper limits being proposed are in fact done by scientists and not by Big Pharma. Comments?

Healthy Living
Don't forget the Omega 3-6-9The first week involved eating whole grains in our meals, good amounts of veggies and at least 3 fruit servings per day and no more 12 ounces of meat at a meal. Snacks consist of nuts and dried fruits instead of cookies etc. And I am back to taking vitamins again like a multi, C, E and supplements like Omega 3-6-9. Oh yes, and a glass of red wine with supper. Both the doctor and the RealAge plan say that it is good for various reasons so I have been doing that since September when the doctor mentioned it. And since I like red wine it has been an easy adjustment.

Replicable Studies
Don't believe everything you read, even if it's a study about supplements.
A JAMA article a few months ago examined the consistency between observational studies and randomized trials. They found that one fourth of the examined observational studies were refuted by later randomized trials. For example, the hormone replacement therapy used in post menopause women has been proven to be harmful by the Women’s Health Initiative Study because the combined estrogen-progestin may increase the risk of breast cancer and heart disease. The effects of vitamin E and C supplements have also been shown to be exaggerated (if not false) in observational studies. Coincidently, the first seemingly “decisively” positive findings for hormone and vitamins are all from the two population studies initiated by Harvard.

Tonics
This blogger likes Dr. Weil'sAs I have mentioned before, I am using Dr. Weil’s Plantidote system from Origins as part of my skin care routine. I am pretty sure that the liquid supplements that are part of his program are considered to be tonics, and are mushroom based - and I can honestly say that I think they are doing some really good things for my skin. This system, along with a topical serum, includes two tonics, a daytime tonic and a nighttime tonic (that tastes reminiscent of Jägermeister, no wonder it is for nighttime!).

Supplemental Politics
California Governor Schwarzenegger's bodybuilding ties are calling into question his veto of a bill restricting the distribution of supplements.
Trouble is, it appears he did a bit more than that. After taking office, and before the deal between himself and AMI was revealed, Schwarznegger vetoed a bill that would have restricted the distribution of questionable dietary and bodybuilding supplements. Had the bill passed, AMI would have lost most of its advertising income, as some 80-85 percent of its advertising income comes from companies that make such supplements. Which would have sunk the magazines and probably AMI as well.

The New Teenage Body Image
Kids these days!
These shortcuts tend to include such over-the-counter products as creatine, protein supplements, and amino acid formulations, which are often sold at gyms, and even more dangerous products such as growth hormones, anabolic steroids and injectible steroids, which are purchased illegally. The effects of the over-the-counter products and the proper dosages to use are not well known, opening the door to possible body damage from continued use. The dangers of steroid use are well known, however, and the list of both physical and psychological effects they can cause is thoroughly documented. This list includes high blood pressure and heart disease, liver damage, cancers, strokes and blood clots, “roid rage?, severe mood swings and paranoia. Despite some adverse publicity from former football players, and the negative publicity about baseball players such as Rafael Palmeiro, teenagers continue to look for shortcuts to the toned and buff look that is becoming increasingly popular.

New Start
Always love to read about another weight loss success.
Even though the whole gym thing has been going good, I want it to start working for me so that I can build muscle tone for once! I am not relying on that to keep my weight where it is because ironically enough, I lost the 30 pounds in 2 years without exercising! Go figure…and more ironically enough, I lost it without dieting-yup…for me, all I had to do was eat smaller portions, don’t eat late, and be sure to have a stable amount of veggies and nuts in my diet with no less than 5 glasses of water a day. That worked out better than trying to stop eating bad foods and taking supplements (herbal) to curb my appetite. I have been maintaining my 125-130 weight range for about a year now and that has been a great place to be. The last I checked myself out, I was 128 pounds-so still in the frame, but a few days ago I saw that I was 130 pounds.

Supplement Rant
An off-beat rant on vitamins and supplements.
We (the rats and I) hope that “David Three Rats” (the blog) will lend some occupancy to a sadly undertenanted niche of discourse; I speak (much as the rats squeal) of a critical, science-based examination of the very many products which crowd the groaning shelves of health food and supplement stores; capsules and caplets, pills and rubs, vitamins, minerals and smelly old dried herbs, tinctures, sugar pills and shit like that, gamepieces in a business which has enjoyed growth of fungal geometry in the last decade and which ain’t gonna quit any time soon.

Homemade Meal Replacements and Weight Gainers!
If you're using supplementsThe meal replacement industry was a multi-million dollar industry in the year 2000. Ranging from weight loss products like Slim Fast to muscle builders like Myoplex, everybody is using them. The only problem with them is that they can become so expensive. Then add in the cost of your other supplements like Creatine and Glutamine and you’re spending over $100 per...

YOU: The Owner's Manual
Anti-aging guru Roizen and celebrated heart surgeon Oz combine their popular approaches to patient-centered care in this assessment of how much, or more to the point, how little, readers know about their bodies. After taking the quizzes in the book, readers may feel shocked by their ignorance of basic anatomy and the processes required to maintain physical and mental functioning. Each chapter focuses on a body part or system (heart, brain, digestive, reproductive, etc.) and discusses diseases associated with it; genetic and lifestyle influences on its aging process; and foods, supplements and habits that can prevent or reverse related illnesses. The book has an entertaining feel: friendly elves guide readers through illustrations of the body and cartoons feature alien creatures that enter the body and cause illness. The humor is irreverent (e.g., muscle cells surrounding dead heart tissue "start fighting with each other, like Jerry Springer's guests, instead of supporting each other, like Oprah's" [incidentally, the authors will appear on Oprah in May to promote the book]). Despite a 10-day, 30-recipe food plan and a less-is-more exercise regime, however, readers may have trouble using the information to create a lifestyle that will fulfill the authors' promise of weight loss, disease prevention and longevity. Even the recipes target one specific area of the body and weaken the overall conceptual framework. This lighthearted book will be most useful to those who like their health lessons served with a side of humor.

Calcium Supplements And Fiber
Oprah Winfrey recently discussed YOU: The Owners ManualAnother way to help this out is by eating Whole Grains. They recommend at least 3 servings of whole grains a day. It can't be just wheat...it's gotta be whole grain. Supposedly steel cut whole grains are great. They have a crunchy texture, low in calories and help drag your stuff out of your system. I've never had them...but they are supposed to be the ultimate whole grain. Whole Grains are also supposed to help prevent heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. They say that whole grains help flush fat and cholesterol out of your system and provide powerful antioxidants that help you stay healthier, look younger and live longer.
And then obviously Fiber (25 grams a day) and Magensium (400 mg a day), especially for women who take calcium supplements.

Do You Know What's In Your Pills?
Canadian health officials say that most nutritional supplements do not comply with regulations regarding labelling and non-permitted ingredients.
A national blitz by federal food inspectors has found that 71 per cent of nutritional supplements and meal replacements tested did not comply with Canadian regulations. The violations included improper labelling, non-permitted ingredients and non-compliance with rules governing the composition of these products.
"This is a true representation of the mainstream marketplace, as all meal replacements and nutrition supplements at these retail outlets were looked at," the report said. It recommended the CFIA conduct more retail blitzes and also "consider going to gymnasiums where concern for compliance with regulatory requirements may be lower."
The inspection and tests are part of an ongoing effort by the CFIA to crack down on the sports nutrition industry, which has been booming. Sales of supplements and weight-loss drinks in the United States jumped by 50 per cent in the past three years to $15.7-billion (U.S.), according to the Nutrition Business Journal. Similar figures are not available for Canada, but the industry is believed to generate about $1-billion (Canadian) in sales annually.
Molly Killingbeck, a former world-class sprinter who now coaches young runners, said she refuses to recommend any supplements to her athletes. "There is so much out there and because it's not regulated you don't know what they are getting," said Ms. Killingbeck, who is manager of athlete services at the Canadian Sport Centre - Ontario. "These companies who are making these products, they pop up overnight and they fold just as quickly."
Bob Hindley, a power lifter in Vancouver, said he welcomes the CFIA blitz and hopes the government will do more to control these products. Mr. Hindley, 47, spends about $200 a month on supplements and they make up about 15 per cent of his diet. He said for many younger athletes, supplements can make up almost half their diet.

Who Let The Dogs Out?
It's best to buy supplements and skin care products from reputable companies rather than from the company that offers a product to good to be true.
Now various websites would hope to convince you that their $96 dollar cologne contains pheromones that will get you laid until the next century. Don't fall for this one, lest you waste that cash. Colognes, sprays, and pills that contain pheromones are considered "supplements" and therefore not subject to the FDA regulation as prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines. Virtually no regulation or inspection of these colognes, and you wanna put this on your skin? They could contain anything, even female dog pheromones, which only cause you...

NSCA's Online Journal
Looks like a good resource for overall fitness, a key to skin care.
The National Strength and Conditioning Association just published the latest issue of its Performance Training Journal. As usual, it looks as though there's quite a bit of good stuff here. The longer I train, the more bored I become with the same-old-same-old generated by muscle magazines, and the more I appreciate information that's based on research (rather than the desire to sell supplements).

Fight Osteoporosis: Bone Up on B12
B12 is an important supplement as we grow older. Here's the 4-1-1.
The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin B12 is 2.4 micrograms per day for both men and women. Low stomach acid and aging can lower the ability to absorb the vitamin. Those over age 50 are encouraged to consume fortified foods or supplements containing B12.

Here's an important test on the contents of vitamins and supplements.
Forget about whether vitamins and herbal supplements actually help you. The question today is: do your vitamins and herbal supplements really contain what they say they do? Consumerlab.com has tested a wide variety of products to determine whether they contained 100% of the labeled amount of vitamins, minerals or herbal supplement.

vitamins R us....
Some supplement regimes are more complicated than others. Take this example.
Fast forward to today. I'm taking all kinds of supplements in hopes of getting myself back on track. Viactiv calcium chews with added vitamin D and K, hair skin and nail multi-vitamins with MSM, 1000 mg evening primose oil capsules, *4* tablespoons of Udo's oil blend per day. Chewable vitamin C tabs or those Emergen-C fizzy vitamin C packety things. I feel like an 80 year old woman with all of the bottles of crap I have by the kitchen sink ...
Then there's Mr. Yogagirl. On his last week of the weight loss challenge with the Atkins Diet Boy. So far he's down about **30** pounds since January 1st. ((( applause))) The other day one of the trainers at the gym suggested he try taking Dandelion and "Kidney Bladder" natural supplements this week. However...don't freak out. The kidney bladder isn't made from kidneys or bladders, apparently it's an herbal mix of crap that functions like a natural diuretic..for instance one of the ingredients was "cramp bark"...ewwwww. WTF is that? At any rate, the trainer swears it will make a person lose about 5-7lbs (I'm sure it's all water) ..I heard him mention something about body builders and their last week before competition. We'll see. Saturday morning is the "weigh-in".

A Fantastic Voyage
Here's a not so simple way to live forever. Perhaps.
As part of his daily routine, Kurzweil ingests 250 supplements, 8 to 10 glasses of alkaline water and 10 cups of green tea. He also periodically tracks 40 to 50 fitness indicators, down to his “tactile sensitivity.” Adjustments are made as needed.
That’s a hell of a lot of supplements Ray Kurzweil.
So, what’s going to replace Kurzweil’s plethora of supplements in 2005? Well, in a word, and according to Ray Kurzweil himself, “Nanobots.”

In Search of Calcium
This post-menopausal woman writes about figuring out the right calcium supplements to manage osteoporosis.
I know that my bones must be losing a lot of calcium, but I don't know what supplements to take. I have tried taking calcium in the past and it has resulted in the most uncomfortable, formidable constipation I had ever had. The calcium I took was derived from oyster shells and was in a tablet formulation with Vitamin D.

Cereal Makers Enter Vitamin Supplement Market
Americans are starting to get vitamin supplements through packaged foods. The best diet is a balanced diet.
"We know that over half of Americans buy supplements and vitamins and take them regularly," says Winshall of Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, "so it's not surprising that everybody wants to get in on the action."

Dietician Aids Sports Pro
Sports professionals always work with a nutritionist or dietician, just as they work with their trainers. Is this something you'd want to consider? Read about how boxer Joe Calzaghe does it.
"I've always done my own dieting but an expert knows more about supplements and vitamins," said Calzaghe in his column for the South Wales Argus.

Herpes Help
Herpes outbreaks are tough to deal with and make an unsightly sore on your skin. Care for that might be available with this supplement.
You've taken acidophilus no doubt, or read of it's benefits for healthy intestinal balance. Did you know that one species, called Lactobacillus Plantarum is stronger than any other? Or that it is more stable and multiplies faster than the more commonly used L. Salvarus and other bacterium?
Plantadophilus indications:
Diarrhea, food allergies, fungus, chronic fatique syndrome, constipation Epstein Barr Syndrome, colds and flu.
In addition, it is specifically indicated for those who suffer with oral or genital herpes. While herpes is not generally a life-threatening problem, it is damaging to self-image and can be quite painful. If you or someone you know suffers with herpes, this information will be of interest:
It has been know for some time now that supplementation with the amino acid lysine can help to reduce outbreaks of herpes and to shorten duration. Less known is the fact that lysine, present in L. Plantarum, is essential for good intestinal balance, in general. In addition, research performed at the University of Nebraska shows that L. Plantarum synthesizes a large amount of lysine. The balance between lysine and arginine, another amino acid, is critical for healthy immune system function. If the arginine balance is far higher than the lysine, then fungal forms, allergies and viruses like the herpes simplex viruses, are not kept under control by the immune system. On the other hand, keeping lysine levels high helps the immune system control allergies, viruses and fungals.

Supplements Regulated?
If you're concerned about regulation of vitamins and supplements, click on the link above for more information on what to do.
Imagine you are driving to your doctor's office.
The funny part is, you feel great. No aches, no pains, no sickness. In fact, you're not going to see your doctor for any illness whatsoever.
Rather, you're going to see him for a prescription... for vitamin C.
A prescription for vitamin C? It sounds ridiculous, but this frightening scenario could come to pass as early as August of this year.
When I heard this news, I was incensed. In fact, I'm still incensed. It's a classic case of government destroying personal freedoms in orderd to "protect" us from ourselves.
